Back to writing and drawing the same story from inherited tigers through JT Neslo and Kid Celephais, reduced and refined, distilled if you like, to its purest form. A Platonic Ideal of the story concept? Not quite.
But sufficient and fit for purpose.
Whilst still no one’s idea of a top artist my artwork is now unobstructive to the story process, and helps the flow rather than crushing me. All in all, a good end to 2015, which has been a bugger of a year. 🙂
Call me Shang Ch’imp, as my father did. It means, “Rising and Advancement of the Chimp”…
Shang Ch’imp is the surviving eldest son of a Man in a Rubber Suit Man-like Monster called Foo Man-Chimp, a scientifically modified male chimp who gained genius level intelligence. Foo is a racial supremacist Villain hell-bent on exterminating the human race and taking over the world with other super-intelligent apes.
Shang Ch’imp was originally raised as a commando, an assault specialist intended to lead covert missions against humans. However he rebelled against his father and sided with the human secret intelligence organisation CIRCUS (Criminal Investigation and Research Committee for Unified Services), to the extent at least of wanting all species to live in peace. Shang Ch’imp has Signature – Monologue, constantly speaking out loud narrating whatever is happening with his own eastern philosophy spin on things.
His father has sworn to destroy Shang Ch’imp and CIRCUS.

Looking like Rod Serling but functiong more like the interventionist or activist Watcher from the now defunct comicbook Marvel Universe, ON The Omnisicient Narrator is a framing device, a character who introduces the action as in my Book of Mysteries comicbook series, but who can also turn up Hitchcock like in crowd scenes, or even assume a role temporarily – old wizard in subway, victim of mugging, taxi driver, scriptwriter waiting in an office – as the need arises.
I’ve been doing “meta” characters since I was a child, but it’s reached the point where I have perfected them to my own liking and have decided to start really using them. Even in Conundrum, whose central premise is that the universe is a lot less “magical” than the superstitious might want, there is still “real” “magic” as well as stage magic and illusions. So in Conundrum, ON will show up. Sometimes in person as it were, more often just look for his color scheme in some random person, animal – or even object!
