One of the things I do on interminable business trips is re-read John Keel. He is a mild sensationalist and much more of a journalist / entertainer than rigorous researcher or ‘scientific’ analyst, but he was no fool. It’s unfortunate he self-censored his writings, and edited them according to his prejudice de jour about the unexplained Forteana that interested him.
Despite that, he was by far the best recorder of the strange of his era.
In relation to Mothman, it seems to me that several different phenomena were noticed at the same broad span of time – an unknown flying cryptid, possibly even Batsquatch based on two of the witness testimony descriptions; some misidentifed rare but known birds; a paranormal / hallucinatory grue or other boogum type scary presence; and something that, despite some overtly organic features – a bird like or bat like form – in all other respects conforms to machine, not living, behavior.
The description of the woman screaming / baby crying / loud mouse squeak type noise is something I have heard in the Pacific, and which seems to be made in the case of the Pacific creature by some sort of thumping great bat or nocturnal bird, more likely a bat or something else with echo location. Rare, weird, somewhat unidentified – but a real living critter.
However in the case of Mothman there is also the set of accounts where televisions blow up, radios screech and hum and people feel a creepy presence at the same time. To me, that sounds like high energy radio or radar, ie electromagnetism sweeping in a ray or beam. I don’t mean a death ray, but I am wondering if it was radar or a FM control beam for some earlier version of a drone as they have come to be called.
People in the Ohio Valley saw, en masse, ‘lights in the sky’ etc. of the same type described in the Dulce case, which means, most likely, that the same MAN MADE secret lighter than air craft was involved. If that craft, which it is documented used Scooby Doo villain type disguises to hide what it was, was in the area, might it also be the case that a “bat winged” somewhat humanoid drone was also used? It’s easy to forget that fan-driven drones were being developed as early as 1952, were described in general terms in boy’s comics and magazines by 1961, and were used by the Navy as early as 1962 for public, or at least not hidden away, missile testing.
Given the existence of drones able to “take straight off flying straight up in the air” it is striking when some Mothman witnesses describe identical behavior of this ‘man-shaped’ but unmoving figure.
I kind of suspect that the Big Bird, the ‘real’ Mothman familiar to the locals around Point Pleasant, ended up being investigated on the QT by say Navy or DIA. To do so without attracting attention they hid themselves within the existing phenomena – as happend at Dulce – just like a Scooby Doo villain using an existing legend as cover. In other words, they set a (man-made) UFO to catch a (they knew for a fact wasn’t a man-made) UFO / cryptid.
It’s a way out idea and it’s pure speculation, but that is one of the things I love the most about John Keel’s work, it is inspiring for these sorts of flights of speculation. He is easier to read than Charles Fort, but very much in the same rich tradition.
John A. Keel, from the introduction to the 1975 paperback edition of ‘Our Haunted Planet’:
I’ll cut right to the chase:
Pepe the Frog isn’t a white nationalist symbol.
Pepe the Frog isn’t a harmless meme propagated by teenagers on the internet.
Pepe the Frog is, in fact, the modern-day avatar of an ancient Egyptian deity accidentally resurrected by online imageboard culture.
Does that sound like the most b@tsh#t crazy thing you’ve ever heard?
Strap in, friendo. You’re in for one hell of a ride.
In the late 1970s, Rudd wrote a mock newspaper story about 2 hijacked planes being flown into the World Trade Center in New York City and hijacked planes crashing into the Pentagon which read like the actual attacks 23 years later almost to a tee.
It comes as a surprise when one first discovers that the Ancient Greeks quite often “reasoned out” their early mythology from depictions in the abandoned ruins of older and in some cases more advanced peoples.
Ouranos is one of the “primordial” Greek “gods” and the name is “translated” as Father Sky, logical counterpart to Mother Earth.
When one sees that in Ancient Egyp it was MOTHER Sky and FATHER EARTH, one also sees that such sexual designations are not inevitable. And one should also be suspicious of “translations” that make identifications inevitable.
All of which is by way of introcuction to the thought bubble – is ancient OANNES the origin of less ancient OURANOUS? The words are similar, and as much as anti-diffusionists, who in many cases are agenda driven anti-rationalists, oppose any logical thinking in relation to language, it is harder to argue that the same “middle east” which gave wholesale of its original pre-Aryan and Aryan culture to the Greeks and China would somehow omit Oannes.
Ouranos mates with Mother Earth. If we accept the basic syllogism for the purpose of argument, the element of earth is visited by another element. There are only three possibilities – air, fire or water.
In the case of Oannes, he is a “fish with human feet” or amphibian, depicted in a very intriguing way as a bearded human head emerging from a fish – suggestive of aquatic apes and bigfoot sightings such as the of the Big Muddy River in America.
Ouranos is identified with the sky in the usual Greek way of groupings based on an initial flawed premise tested to destruction. In the same manner that Akhnaten and Egyptian Thebes, the monotheism heresy and his children and incestuous relationships becomes Oedipus, the Seven Against Thebes and so on for the Hellenic world when in fact the whole thing is momentous Egyptian history, so too having Zeus (“Sky”) as ruler of the gods means “logically” his father-god and grandfather-god must too be sky rulers. But there is no reason why that would be true. Abandon that point and leave the relationships in place and something more logical emerges.
Oannes the civilizer “married” Mother Earth through the simple precedent of emerging from the ocean to dry land, there to teach the primitives of the foreshore pre-existing knowledge he and his race already held.
Matching Oannes with Ouranos opens some interesting doors.
Pondering alternative hypotheses regarding Bigfoot made me think back to the red furred “nephilim”, the aquatic ape hypothesis, Enkidu, the most ancient recorded “gods” and the fact that the earliest depictions of “gods” gave both male and female “deities” beards and shaggy hair, sometimes with horns.
If Enkido’s race are a breed of Bigfoot, which he certainly sounds like, might the ancient Sumerian gods be a Bigfoot species too?
It would explain their large size compared to their subjects, and also explain their long beards and hair irrespective of sex.
The creation myth describing how they made modern human stock would also fir with Bigfoot being such a close relative of modern humans too.
I still feel there is something like this in Earth’s past, and it is a fact that the US government swoops down on some Bigfoot encounters with the full secrecy apparatus.
I am wondering if the aquatic ape hypothesis if true led to a branch of Bigfoot type humanoids going back to the sea, living in it and under it, and developing an advanced technology, before re-emerging as Oannes for example and civilisng the terrestrial hominids they encountered.
Quite a few serious and sensible earlier UFO investigators, or more properly genuine Forteans, inclined eventually to the view that there was an undersea civilisation of great sophisticiation, living in sea floor cities at enormous depth.
Perhaps to Charles Fort’s “X” and “Y” theories we should add “Z” – Oannes the aquatic ape?
