Chuck Feeney squirrelled away his business fortune in tax havens — but after achieving a personal wealth of more than $7 billion, decided to give it all away.

he Irish American, now 83 years old, set up a foundation in 1982 called Atlantic Philanthropies whose goal was to dispense with his entire fortune before his death.

After three decades of giving, the foundation made one of its final donations yesterday by pledging $46 million to promote shared education between Catholic and Protestant children in Northern Ireland.

Mr Feeney, who made his fortune from duty free shopping, was born to humble Catholic Irish migrants and raised in New Jersey during the Depression, The Independent reports.

His entrepreneurial skills were evident at the age of 10 when he started selling Christmas cards door-to-door.
