Amalgam Comics was a publishing imprint shared by DC Comics and Marvel Comics, in which the two comic book publishers merged their characters into new ones (e.g., DC Comics’ Batman and Marvel Comics’ Wolverine became the Amalgam character Dark Claw).
It’s customary to refer to the Third Doctor and the Master as being a rivalry inspired by or based on that of Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty. This is absolutely correct, but what is incorrect is the attempts by some fans and the then-production team to imply it’s the literary version of Sherlock Holmes which is their inspiration. Nothing could be further from the truth.
From the beak nosed protagonist to the criminal mastermind who uses hypnotism and grisly murder methods, to the B-Movie stories and the teaming up with other enemies, the UNIT era is firmly based on and set in the kind of B-Movie universe as the BASIL RATHBONE Sherlock Holmes film series…
Doctor Who (Third Doctor) + Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes = DOCTOR HOLMES.
Exiled to Earth after a long distinguished career ending in a long espionage adventure in World War 1 (His Last War Games), The Doctor adopts the persona of a consulting detective and chooses some Bland pseudonym under which to operate from his surprisingly spacious rooms at 221 B Baker Street in London.
